First Visit

As a new patient, what do I need to prepare before my first appointment?

1. Please consider your meal before your appointment! Especially for acupuncture treatment, it is not recommended to start the session on an empty stomach or after eating too much, unless you have special instructions from your TCM practitioner.

2. If you are taking any prescription medication or health supplements, please bring the relevant information with you to your appointment, so that we can have a better understanding of your condition.

3. If this is your first visit to our clinic, please arrive 15 minutes early to complete the necessary initial consultation forms, which will allow your TCM practitioner enough time to review your information before the consultation.

What kind of clothing should I wear during my appointment?

As the body’s acupuncture points are located throughout the entire body, it is important for the physician to access these points for treatment. It is recommended that you avoid wearing tight-fitting or one-piece clothing to your appointment. However, please note that we do provide clean treatment gowns for you to change into during your treatment.

Do insurance companies cover Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment?

Most insurance companies include “acupuncture” in their coverage, which also includes cupping therapy, as they are both based on the principles of acupuncture points and meridians. However, it’s important to note that Chinese herbal medicine is not typically included in acupuncture coverage. The amount of coverage you receive will depend on your insurance policy, so please contact your insurance company directly for more information. Our clinic will provide you with a receipt to assist you in seeking insurance reimbursement.

What are the differences between Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine?

Western Medicine typically uses standardized treatment methods for disease treatment. For example, two people with the same illness will usually receive the same or similar treatment, unless there are individual factors such as different medical histories or allergic reactions during treatment.

In contrast, Traditional Chinese Medicine emphasizes a comprehensive understanding of your overall physical condition, as well as various factors that affect your daily life, such as diet, emotions, and environment, before providing appropriate treatment. Therefore, two people with the same illness may receive two different treatment methods, depending on each individual’s unique physical condition and the underlying causes of the illness.

Acupuncture-related question

Will acupuncture be painful?

Usually not! The needles used in acupuncture are thinner than those used in general injections, so there is almost no pain when they are inserted. During the treatment, you may feel a dull or heavy sensation in the treated area, which is a normal reaction known in Chinese medicine as “De Qi” and is an important indicator of the correctness of the needle placement. In some cases, the acupuncturist may need to gently twist or move the needle to provide stronger stimulation to the acupoint, which may cause brief discomfort. If you want to avoid these situations, please tell your acupuncturist! By timely communicating your personal situation to the acupuncturist, they can provide you with better care.

What should I do if I'm afraid of needles?

There are many different treatment methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and we strive to provide personalized service for each individual. If you are afraid of needles, please be sure to inform your TCM practitioner during the consultation.

Is there any risk associated with acupuncture?

Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a trained and experienced practitioner. Some people may experience minor side effects during acupuncture, such as bruising, dizziness, or a tingling sensation. If you experience any of these sensations during acupuncture, please inform your practitioner immediately so they can make appropriate adjustments.

How many acupuncture treatments are needed for effectiveness?

The number of acupuncture treatments needed for effectiveness varies depending on the individual’s medical history and the specific condition being treated. Sometimes, results can be seen within a single treatment, but for chronic or complex conditions, more frequent treatments may be needed.

Herbal Medicine-related question

What is Chinese herbal medicine treatment?

Chinese herbal medicine treatment is a carefully curated natural healing approach and an important component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Unlike medication that targets specific symptoms, Chinese herbal medicine targets the root cause of the disease and can even address multiple problems simultaneously. Organic and natural Chinese herbal medicine is more compatible with your body and has fewer side effects than conventional drugs. Chinese herbal medicine is best suited for internal medicine diseases, especially when used in combination with acupuncture treatment.

All Chinese herbs are formulated into water-soluble granules for convenient and quick ingestion with warm water, eliminating the need to spend hours at home preparing traditional Chinese herbal medicine. If granules are not your preferred option, the pharmacy can also provide Chinese herbs in capsule or pill form.

In addition to being convenient, the water-soluble granule form of Chinese herbal medicine benefits from professional extraction technology. The Chinese herbal medicine granules we provide have higher concentration and purity, better efficacy, and quality than other products on the market. Of course, all the Chinese herbs we provide have been tested and found to meet pesticide, bacteria, and heavy metal (such as arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium) standards. We believe that only high-quality Chinese herbs can help every physician’s carefully curated Chinese herbal prescription reach its maximum effectiveness in patients.

Is the taste of Chinese medicine really bad?

The answer is that it’s possible. The taste of Chinese medicine can vary depending on the ingredients included in the prescription given by the doctor. Our clinic offers water-soluble granules (powdered medicine) that greatly improve the traditional unpleasant taste of Chinese medicine. If you still find it difficult to accept, our pharmacy also provides the option of making the medicine into tablets or capsules!

Are there any risks associated with Chinese medicine treatment?

Just like with any type of food or medicine, there is a risk of negative interactions with other substances in your body when using Chinese medicine. For example, consuming garlic with blood thinning medication may increase the risk of bleeding. Therefore, it is important to provide your doctor with as much information as possible, ideally recorded in your medical history, about all the medications, supplements, allergies, dietary restrictions, and other relevant factors that you are currently using. This will help them to make informed decisions when prescribing Chinese medicine and avoid potential side effects.

How many treatment courses are needed for Chinese medicine treatment?

The duration of Chinese medicine treatment varies depending on the type of disease and individual medical history. For example, acute illnesses such as the common cold may show improvement within 1-2 days after taking the prescribed medication. However, for chronic illnesses, it may take several weeks or even longer, and you may need to schedule regular follow-up appointments with your doctor to adjust your medication according to changes in your condition.
